Why is Numerical Literacy Important?
Numerical literacy is important not only to do well in school, but for reasons outside of schooling. In today's age, the world is becoming more science and technology oriented. Without being mathematically literate, a person will be less likely to succeed, especially in these fields.
People need to be able to determine the risks and benefits in situations, calculate rates, probabilities, and values, as well as use qualitative reasoning to understand different methods and ideas.
Some researchers deem numerical literacy as the biggest barrier to upward mobility.
For example, as the world is developing more "green," or eco-friendly products, people with an advanced mathematics background are needed to help plan and build these products. If a person is not numerically literate, they would be unable to succeed in this field.
"Business would be 'ecstatic' if graduates were quantitatively literate."
-Retired General Electric engineer William Steenken
